EUR/USD and USD/JPY React to Hawkish Fed Guidance

The foreign-exchange market saw significant movement in EUR/USD and USD/JPY on September 17, 2026, after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates and maintained a hawkish outlook. The euro weakened against the dollar, while the Japanese yen remained under pressure as traders evaluated the possibility of further U.S. tightening and a potential Bank of Japan rate hike.

EUR/USD fell toward 1.1460 during Asian trading hours. The decline followed the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4.00%. The euro weakened because the interest-rate gap between the United States and the euro area could become more favorable to dollar assets.tradingkey

When the U.S. offers higher interest rates than the European Central Bank, investors may prefer holding dollars instead of euros. This can increase selling pressure on EUR/USD. However, the euro may find support if European economic data improves or if traders believe the European Central Bank could maintain a more restrictive policy.

The next major focus for EUR/USD traders is U.S. economic data, including initial jobless claims and future inflation figures. Strong U.S. data could support expectations of another Fed rate hike and push the currency pair lower. Weaker data could reduce those expectations and help the euro recover.

USD/JPY also moved higher, reaching approximately 156.12 before retreating slightly below 156.00. The yen weakened because the Federal Reserve’s higher interest rates increased the yield advantage of the dollar.home+1

The Japanese currency is highly sensitive to interest-rate differences. Japan has historically maintained lower interest rates than the United States, encouraging carry trades in which investors borrow yen and invest in higher-yielding dollar assets. When U.S. yields rise, these trades can become more attractive, putting additional pressure on the yen.

However, traders are also pricing in the possibility of a Bank of Japan rate hike. This expectation helped the yen recover from its weakest levels during the session. If the Bank of Japan adopts a more hawkish stance, USD/JPY could face downward pressure despite the Federal Reserve’s policy.

The currency pair may therefore remain volatile in the near term. A sustained move above 156 could signal continued dollar strength, while a decline below 155 may indicate that yen buyers are returning.

The outlook for both currency pairs depends on central-bank policy. For EUR/USD, the key question is whether the Federal Reserve will continue tightening while the European Central Bank remains cautious. For USD/JPY, the market must balance higher U.S. yields against the possibility of Japanese policy normalization.

Forex traders should avoid focusing on a single headline. Interest-rate expectations, bond yields, inflation data, employment figures, and central-bank communication all influence currency prices. Unexpected comments from Fed or Bank of Japan officials can create sharp movements even when there is no formal policy decision.

The current market environment favors the U.S. dollar, but the rally may face periods of profit-taking. The dollar’s strength could continue if U.S. economic data remains robust and the Fed signals further tightening. Conversely, weaker data or stronger action from the Bank of Japan could lead to a reversal.

Overall, EUR/USD remains vulnerable near the 1.1460 area, while USD/JPY is being closely watched around 156. Traders should use careful risk management because both pairs are responding to major global policy changes.
